Since the launch of KCMO Angels in 2020, Alyssa Carter has been a foundational leader and a dedicated advocate for the foster care community. With a career in Missouri’s child welfare system dating back to 2011, Alyssa brings a wealth of frontline experience to her role. She began her journey as an investigator for the Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline before spending a decade assessing, training, and overseeing the licensure of foster and relative homes across the greater Kansas City area.
This deep, firsthand understanding of the system's complexities informs every aspect of her work as Program Director. Alyssa is a relational bridge-builder and a steady leader who is guided by trauma-informed practices and a heart for community. She is passionate about ensuring that no child falls through the cracks, focusing her expertise on building strong programs that offer meaningful, lasting connections for youth and families.
When she isn’t building bridges for our families, Alyssa is likely tending to her own "village" in Richmond, Missouri. She and her family are ranchers, and she finds great joy in the rhythm of caring for her cattle and her beloved silkies. However, her most important role is being a mom to her four children; she delights in being fully present in their lives and remains their biggest cheerleader.
Whether she is enjoying a quiet morning, traveling to new places, or working to transform the foster care experience in KCMO, Alyssa lives with a deep sense of purpose. She is a firm believer in the power of the village and won’t stop until every youth in our city feels a true sense of belonging and hope.
